Introduction The results of a 1995 Gallup Poll demonstrated that approximately 61 per cent of adults and 71 per cent of young people believe that "the world will come to an end or be destroyed" (Bezilla, 1996:26). A different poll suggests that three teenagers in ten fear that the world will invariably come to an end in their lifetimes (Bezilla, 1996:26 in Wojick 1999:2). While, still another sample of more than one third of over "seventeen thousand high school seniors," felt that "nuclear or biological annihilation will probably be the fate of all mankind within my generation" (Wojick 1999:2). Even before the events surrounding September 11, 2001 the legacy of the twentieth century's proliferation of apocalyptic imagery engendered a wide array of cataclysmic visions. We already had lived through the end of the world many times, images of the end have been repeated over and over again until ultimately visions of worldwide disasters seem a part of history and histrionic memory (of a possible future already passed).
